“You will still regulate, but sometimes you’ll have to pay”. Just two years ago, this sentence pronounced by a Canadian official concerning the CETA (EU-Canada) deal had shaken the Walloon MPs, who had asked if CETA would indeed make Wallonia pay when it legislates to protect health or the environment. CETA could return to the Belgian decision-making table before the 2019 elections for approval, following the EU Court’s opinion on the investor-to-State arbitration clause (expected in December).

The Advocate General presents his conclusions on 23 October. Two years after the first season of the “CETA saga”, the time has come to reopen this debate.

This is why the ULB Institute of European Studies, the ULB Cercle du Libre Examen and CNCD-11.11.11.11 take the opportunity of the exceptional presence in Brussels of Professeur Gus Van Harten of the Osgoode Hall Law School of Toronto and invite you to this conference-debate. This event is organized in the context of the ULB’s academic year dedicated to “Europe of Knowledge” ( “L’Europe de la connaissance”).
