About the conference

This conference assembles scholars of European social policy to revisit the debates pitching market versus social citizenship in the European context, in the light of novel empirical insights.

More specifically, the objective is to understand the evolving role of the EU – through its policies, prescriptions, and the reactions to them – in reshaping social citizenship in a multilevel fashion.

The 4 panels of the conference cover the following topics:

  • Re-envisioning European Social Citizenship
  • European Social Citizenship from Below?
  • Contours of European Social Citizenship in the 21st Century
  • Beyond European Market Citizenship?
